One day, your little sister is going to fall for a man who is not kind…
who’s intentions are not pure, a man who treats her with disregard and disrespect.
You’re going to hate this man. You’re going to want to destroy him. You’ll wonder how one could run off such cowards blood. And in that moment of hate for this man, I hope you remember
you were that same man
to me.
So instead of looking him in the eyes, look back at yourself in the mirror—you are the man you now HATE.
Tell yourself, “I don’t care“, just like you said it to me, say it [again] for me, for your little sister, for the man who will treat your sister that way— someday. Tell me how it feels to know your sister is being treated that way and you are looking at her as she looks at him tears in her eyes begging for sympathy, praying to hold composure, asking God to grant her grace to restrain the fear and keep her pride, and tell us all YOU DON’T CARE.
Now we all know— you don’t care, you never did, you never will…
but I do— and she does too.
Maybe she’s me, or maybe I was her. But you’re just that same man, that same man who doesn’t care…
but I did— and she will too.

I don’t believe in God, neither do I have a little sister, and I’m not that man, but I do have a little daughter, and my wish for her is that she doesn’t meet that man. A very beautiful capture, Coco. Ginger.

Part of me wonders if I am that man. While I don’t have a younger sister, I’ve been betrayed that way, but have also done that to others, so I think all of us probably are ‘that man’ at some point in our life.

Guys, remember, you too have a sister… And especially, the one who brought you here in this world, is, no other than a Woman.
And P.S….
I met “that” man.

Very thought provoking and harrowing. I do think to an element we all are ‘that man’. People push people they know will let them away with it. I think everyone hase been on the receiving end and has also subsequently been the perpetrator. One of life’s vicious circles

Coco- your writing is extremely powerful. The day each man will begin to think about each woman (and off course treat her with same respect and dignity) as his sister or daughter or mother, he will not be able to inflict the hurt, disrespect and pain that he otherwise does so thoughtlessly. That will be a new dawn. It’s a shame that many men do not think like this and instead continue to exhibit duplicity in their behaviors. Great post indeed! Thanks.

The picture makes it even more intense… I love it!
Karma is real, and while we cannot be with someone we don’t love forever, the least we can do is be kind and not “not care”.
Keep the circle positive!

That man was also once a boy
seeing his father mistreat his mother
his idea of how to treat a woman
formed long before he was a brother
His sister too, from just a small girl
learned about love from what she viewed
so now she only thinks she’s loved
when being disrespected and abused
While this doesn’t exuse an individuals actions, there is a vicious cycle at work and fathers, brothers, sisters and mothers all have a responsibilty to help break it before someone else gets hurt.
Thanks for sharing your heartfelt and painful words Ginger, I know there are many out there who can relate and hopefully they will take something positive away from your touching poem.

Coco tihs is very powerful and a good version of ‘Be Done by as You DId’. I wonder how much of what you write reflects your own anguish? If it does then I say that you are such a treasure that you must be meeting the wrong people. Ultimately that is bad even if your present experiences stimulate such powerful writing. I hope that you ditch him, as you would advise your sister to do, and find a good person who appreciates you and loves you exclusively for the gem that you are. Then, cliche as it is, you may have a ‘Hallmark Movie’ experience.

I remember saying something similar to this to an old friend who was a womanizer, yet threatened the life of his baby sister’s first love for breaking her heart. Don’t know that it made any difference to him or if he saw the connection between himself and this heart breaker. The way you’ve written this is very intense and touching. Well done 🙂

You’re forgetting something. My sister isn’t as dumb as you. Don’t you think it’s a bit bitter to wish something bad to happen to a 16 year old? Don’t ever even think of her again you are not worthy she is the greatest treasure on this entire earth.

I have always tried my best not to be that man. Unfortunately, my younger sister did meet one as such. After 20 years they are still together. He has improved himself to some degree; but his motto is still: “I don’t care”.

My father was that man, I have been that man and my sister has had that man. Thank you for your perspective. Through people like you, may people see sooner than I did that in one way or another, we will all be related when the end is written.
Please don’t write us all off, just yet. It is difficult sometimes to regain compassion once you have lost it.
