When you don’t drink there is nothing to do and no where to go and no one to meet. I just walk along the rows of books at the library becoming friends with legendary verses, historic stories, and Greek poetry. I read ‘The Notebook of Leonardo da Vinci’, and flip through books on politics and house decorating. I pick up Colette remembering how Roman Paynetold me my poetry was similar to her writing— I realize the seeing of this book is no accident.
And while not going anywhere, or seeing anyone and having nothing to do…I somehow find everything, become everyone and without so much as a clock or a bother.
Reading and writing does give one the opportunity to travel without traveling, doing without actually doing, becoming whoever you want all without a time piece or bother. I enjoyed reading. Thanks for sharing.
Serendipity. My bedside reader this month is Leo’s Notebook. My version does not have accompanying illustrations, unfortunately. I totally relate about spending time in a library instead of other options. Nicely stated.
A vicarious life, reading; and yet, who’s to say it is any less real than the life people have without reading, flitting from bar to bar, drinking and making only shallow passing contact with people they might meet once? Certainly, I think, reading offers a deeper experience in the longer run.
Well I for one say that. And what you describe would be understating the institution of night life and the ‘mating’ that it evokes. But of course you might as well read about it. Depends on your taste.
Nicely put. I have discarded far more relationships than books in my life, mainly because the former proved less satisfying, compelling, or formative of my thoughts and spirit than the latter. I have always sought something a bit deeper than what the average social interaction offers, and though I find it in other people sometimes, it is the exception.

I just read an amazing book that is really making me think! What to Expect When No Ones Expecting: about the coming demographic crisis in the US. So when you take the time to read a book like that, it gives you something to say when you are with people, so your social interaction is far more valuable when you are with people. I highly recommend this book.

The Merriam-Webster Unabridged defines it as ‘having a strong urge to write’. Coined for you methinks 😀
